From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Shakespeare’s legendary tragedy is revisited in this spirited and entertaining production that ran in London from November 2007 to February 2008. The flawless, talented cast features Ewan McGregor as the conniving Iago, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Othello (whose performance won him the Olivier Award as best actor) and Kelly Reilly as Desdemona. There is also excellent support from Tom Hiddleston (as Cassio) and Michelle Fairley (as Emilia). This audio production is a rousing, theatrical performance expertly guided by director Michael Grandage. Complete with a musical score as well as full sound effects and background noises, listening is so enjoyable that the play speeds by at breakneck pace. An enclosed booklet contains color photographs of the production and a well-written essay by drama professor Russell Jackson. There’s also an entertaining bonus DVD disc featuring interviews with the cast and crew. Brilliantly produced in all departments, listening is the next best thing to seeing it live. (July)

From School Library Journal

Gr 10 Up-Naxos AudioBooks’ top-drawer Classic Drama Series blissfully continues with this exquisite rendition of Othello starring Hugh Quarshie, Anton Lesser, Emma Fielding, and a full cast of professional English actors with extensive credits in the Royal National Theatre, BBC Radio Drama Company, and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Shakespeare’s most domestic tragedy is an exceedingly complex journey through jealousy, self-doubt, inadequacies, and societal acceptance. Passed over for military promotion, Iago, perhaps Shakespeare’s most nefarious character, manipulates Othello’s downfall, culminating in the murder of his beloved wife, Desdemona, and Othello’s subsequent suicide. Under David Timson’s stewardship as director, the story is beautifully and simply told, embellished only with intermittent brassy flourishes of classical music and a dramatic echo effect and throbbing heart beat to underscore Othello’s chaotic descent and rage. While the entire cast is excellent, the trio of Quarshie (Othello), Lesser (Iago), and Fielding (Desdemona) are outstanding. An outline of each individual cassette, complete synopsis, full notes regarding the text, and cast biographies are included in a compact 24-page supplemental booklet. For all collections.-Barry X. Othello was one of the first plays I was exposed to when I was younger. It has murder, suicide, intrigue and things that would get a teenager into Shakespeare.

I’ve had mixed success with some of the free Kindle versions of Shakespeare. Some have been good, some have been awful. This is an exceptional version. It’s formatted nicely and is easy to read. The only "lack" is that it is without line numbers, so if you were to use this for academic reasons, you might have an issue or two.

Thus far, Othello’s my favorite free Shakespeare play. I missed how much of a jerk Iago was, and all the deception that lead to Othello killing Desdemona.

If you’ve got a Kindle and want to read Shakespeare, then download this version.

Is there any other character in all of literature who is as calculatingly evil as Shakespeare’s Iago? His jealousy over being passed over in favor of Cassio engenders a revengeful scheme that turns jealousy into a weapon used to destroy the noble Othello. Here innocence and trust is contrasted with pure manipulation and evil in what is one of Shakespeare’s most revealing tragedies. The characters act exactly as they would be expected to based on the overriding quality that they represent. Othello is wonderful Shakespearean drama that ranks among his greatest works.

The Folger Library editions are my favorite. Each page has a facing page that explains obscure terms and helps as a handy reference to make reading the plays pleasurable and educational. These paperback editions of Shakespeare’s works are a great value and fit in your pocket.

Really, if you enjoy Shakespeare’s plays, then you’ll enjoy Othello. The actual read-ability of this digital version is excellent, so I’d recommend it above other digital versions.

The Five Languages of Apology Audible – Unabridged ridged
Author: Gary Chapman ID: B001NQ6HH0

Just as you have a different love language, you also hear and express the words and gestures of apology in a different language. New York Times best-selling author Gary Chapman has teamed with counselor Jennifer Thomas on this groundbreaking study of the way we apologize, discovering that it’s not just a matter of will – it’s a matter of how. By helping people identify the languages of apology, this book clears the way toward healing and sustaining vital relationships. The authors detail proven techniques for giving and receiving effective apologies.

The first thing I had to do when I received my copy of The Five Languages of Apology was to take The Apology Language Profile in the back of the book. I approached it in the happy, fun way I used to look at surveys in women’s magazines until the very first question stopped me dead in my tracks. Since it was about how a spouse should apologize for failing to acknowledge a wedding anniversary, it hit home right away. I knew this was going to be a serious book and that it would bring up some very raw emotions. My husband had recently intended to acknowledge our anniversary with a beautiful gift, but it was stolen from his car before he had the chance, and nothing more was said or done about it. Even though I knew my husband was not to blame, I needed someone to take responsibility and there was no one to do that thus creating an unresolved issue we would eventually work through. As I read more of the questions, I experienced emotions ranging from sadness to anger and by the end of it I realized that very few people had ever apologized to me at all let alone took the time to figure out my apology language! It made perfect sense to me that my preferred apology language is accepting responsibility, since people who come from dsyfunctional homes often long for someone to own up to what he or she has done or said, and because this rarely happens, communication becomes distorted. In the midst of my own issues this book was addressing, I was comforted by the words Chapman and Thomas used to lead me from feeling very alone and rejected because of the lack of apologies given to me, to experiencing some healing and closure due to the new understanding I have been given. I have also become much more aware of the apologies I see in movies and in my relationships with friends. I do believe that if we could get to the point of being willing to apologize, even if we have to stumble through it at first, we would broaden our ability to truly love one another.

Since I read The Five Love Languages of Children, I knew The Five Languages of Apology would be just as thoroughly insightful. Who couldn’t use some help enhancing relationships? The authors provide various examples, stories, and questions without making the reader feel criticized or reprimanded. For me, page 88, "statements of genuine repentance" was practical. Chapter 14, Apologizing to Yourself is thought-provoking. The authors also emphasize that apologizing is a choice as is forgiveness.

According to the authors, the "art of apology" needs to be learned in childhood. When appropriate, parents need to apologize to their children – it’s a way of taking responsibility for one’s behavior. Since parents are the first and most influential teachers, we teach kids to apologize by doing so ourselves. It’s not a sign of weakness to apologize – but of maturity and accountability.

Chapter 15, "What If We All Learned to Apologize Effectively?" is summed up with, "Fewer people would turn to drugs and alcohol in an effort to find escape from broken relationships. And fewer people would live on the streets of America."

Keep this book on your shelf or bedside table as a quick and useful resource for the relationship challenges in daily life.

Now, I’d like to see these authors write a book on how to confront effectively.

~ Brenda Nixon, Author of Parenting Power in the Early Years and The Birth to Five Book: Confident Childrearing Right from the Start

This book is one of the better installments in the "Five Love Languages" series of Gary Chapman. Having read the original Five Love Languages title and a few of the follow-ups, this one provides the most additional fresh material to the initial volume. Being able to communicate a sincere apology is an increIDgly needed skill in today’s age of dodging responsibility and laying blame on others. Chapman and Thomas do a good job in providing the reader insight as to how to apologize in five different styles, depending upon the recipient’s personality or "apology language." Included with the book are an apology profile and a group study guide. For anyone wanting truly to make amends in a fractured relationship, this volume is a good place to start.

The section on how to take a Remedies test alone made this book a great buy.

The best book I’ve ever found to study the law of remedies. Very clear and specific explanations, a lot of examples supported by the case law. I would highly recommend the book for exams preparation.

Perfect fit for law library uses.

Intentional Living PDF

Intentional Living: Choosing a Life That Matters Audible – Unabridged ridged
Author: John C. Maxwell ID: B014JXQ80E

John C. Maxwell, number-one New York Times best-selling author, helps listeners take the first steps to living a life that matters in Intentional Living. We all have a longing to be significant. We want to make a contribution, to be a part of something noble and purposeful. But many people wrongly believe significance is unattainable. They worry that it’s too big for them to achieve. That they have to have an amazing idea, be a certain age, have a lot of money, or be powerful or famous to make a real difference. The good news is that none of those things is necessary for you to achieve significance and create a lasting legacy. The only thing you need to achieve significance is to be intentional. And to do that, all you need to do is start. You can’t make an impact sitting still and doing nothing. Every major accomplishment that’s ever been achieved started with a first step. Sometimes it’s hard; other times it’s easy; but no matter what, you have to do it if you want to get anywhere in life. In Intentional Living, John Maxwell will help you take that first step, and the ones that follow, on your personal path through a life that matters.

This is John’s most personal and powerful book to date. It is chock-full of personal stories that help illustrate what can happen when you start living life by design instead of default. Everyone wants to make a difference in the world, and "Intentional Living: Choosing a Life that Matters," is the instruction guide for how to make it happen.

As is typical of John’s writing style, he shares a number of simple but very powerful ideas and actions you can take to get some momentum on your mission like; start small but believe big, search until you find your why, add value to others from your sweet spot, connect with like-minded people, and more.

I also enjoy the stories he tells about how he came to prominence in his field, and it should not be a surprise: He got around people like Norman Vincent Peale, W. Clement Stone, Zig Ziglar, etc. and invested in their books, conferences and other resources. He was (and still is) intentional about his personal growth and development and he encourages you to do the same throughout the book.

It seems like today it’s a badge of honor to say you’re overwhelmed, hustling, and "busy" beyond belief. However, as a leader this statement is a sign of burning out, not advancing forward. The goal is not a life of default, where busyness reigns. Rather, the proven path is a life of design, where intentionality abounds. In his simple, but profound style, bestselling author John C. Maxwell places these practical and proven leadership lessons on the "bottom shelf" so people can access them at every level. Discover why selfishness and significance are incompatible. Unpack how intentional people create their own calendars, rather than react to the agendas of others. Maxwell and his fantastic team have done it again. They’ve dug deep, struck treasure, and best of all shared it with us in an educationally entertaining manner.

You will quickly realize there is a great difference between intention and intentional. Those extra two letters move people from something desired to the action necessary to obtain it.

John Maxwell shares much of his life’s experiences, especially when he was young, to show how intentionality enriched his life. Most people survive, some are successful, fewer still lead a life of significance. The amazing thing – it is not as hard as most of us think. Know your story, your passion, purpose and have a plan. But nothing will happen if you don’t execute. DAILY. IN SMALL, CONTINUOUS, CONSTANT INTENTIONAL STEPS.

So stop reading this review. Read, study and put into practice what you learn in this book. You will be astonished at how your life dramatically improves.

Oh, don’t forget to send in your story!

This book was actually one of the better psychology books available. It gets to the point most of the time but it does have a lot of story fillers and DSM-5 excerpts.

I recommend this over many of the psychology books out there.

This book has so much in it, I will be keeping it with my DSM 5. It covers prevention too!

This is a great book in any platform! I purchased the kindle edition for class, and it was worth every penny. It tends to load slowly sometimes, but not often!

Trustee’s Legal Companion, The: A Step-by-Step Guide to Administering a Living Trust Kindle Edition
Author: Liza Hanks ID: B00W89G5ZU

Done.
File Size: 4545 KBPrint Length: 416 pagesPublisher: NOLO; 3 edition (March 19, 2015)Publication Date: March 30, 2015 Sold by:  Digital Services, Inc. Once again, Nolo has produced an amazingly helpful guide to what can be a rather murky process. I had never truly understood the significance of a trust, nor the subtleties. And as co-administrator of mine, I knew i was in the right book when one of the first things I read was, "If you are a co-administrator, be warned it will make things even more difficult". Great. The authors jump right into it by describing the prospective trustee just what they’re in for, and assuring you that if you have any doubts as to your abilities in this regard, to take a pass with no bad feelings.

Straightforward, you could say, like all the other Nolo books I have read. It is quite current, updated but a few months ago,and also gives information specific to particular states, which is also simply interesting to read and learn what the differences are. It also allows me to ask questions now, instead of waiting until it is too late and I can only turn to a lawyer. Not that there’s anything wrong in that, but the more informed I am the better job I can do of avoiding pitfalls due to a lack of basic facts.

While I am trying to read it cover to cover, it is organized (and the authors point this out) to be also useful in skipping around should a specific issue arise. I plan on doing both- forewarned is forearmed and all- but I know when a gray area in my family trust appears, this fine book will be most illuminating.

Nolo is well known for its clearly written do-it-yourself guides to handling legal issues. I’ve used many Nolo products in the past and have always found them to be informative and practical. "The Trustee’s Legal Companion" is no exception.

Anybody who is a trustee of a living trust, or might be named as a trustee, will find this book to be an invaluable resource. The text is very comprehensive, with guidance for all of the important activities in administering a living trust: deciding if one should be a trustee, working with beneficiaries, managing assets, dealing with taxes, and terminating the trust.

As with just about all Nolo publications, this book is organized in a very straightforward way. Each chapter covers a broad topic, such as The First Few Months [of running a trust after assuming control], Assets That Should Be in the Trust-But Aren’t, Thinking Like a Trustee, or Getting Help When You Need It. After a brief introduction, the text explains the key principles underlying each topic and helps you figure out your legal rights and responsibilities.

The book does have a couple of minor weaknesses. First, task checklists are scattered throughout the text. Most other Nolo books gather their checklists, often as tear-out pages, in a single appendix. Having everything in one place would be more convenient. In addition, this book is written in more of a textbook style than other Nolo titles. While the book is still easy to read and understand, the outline/bullet point format used in other books is better suited for presenting this kind of material to a general audience. These are minor quibbles though, and don’t detract much from the overall quality of the book.

Bottom line: "The Trustee’s Legal Companion" is a reliable, no frills-no hype guide. All living trust trustees (and prospective trustees) owe it to themselves to pick up this book. Four stars.

I have held off reviewing this because it’s one of those products where it’s hard to evaluate how good it is until it’s really called upon – which, in this case, would be upon the death of a loved one with a living trust in place. In the meantime I can say this: The book is written by two estate planning attorneys and is written in language that is relatively easy to understand. Not only does the book cover the tasks required of the trustee in administering a living trust, but the book goes further and includes help for handling things that are OUTSIDE of the trust (but might involve the trustee anyway) – e.g. life insurance, retirement plans, pension plans, etc. The book has been helpful in guiding some steps we can take now with regards to the trust to facilitate it being more easily administered later. Laws may change and this may slightly change some applications of this guide over time, but I do think the guide is an excellent reference book to keep on-hand and consult periodically.

Rick Yancy’s The 5th Wave series envisions the world after aliens known only as the Others attack. Silent and unseen, the Others watched the humans for ten thousand years before their invasion that slaughtered over 7 billion people through pestilence and coastal destruction, leaving them without food, electricity, medicine and with little hope. Small pockets of people are left to fend for themselves when the Others begin to hunt them down, murdering them and spiriting away their small children. The 5th Wave of the invasion is the worst of them all: the Others have taken over human bodies leaving people suspicious and fearful of one another, trusting no one. But then one human girl falls in love with an alien boy…

The second novel, The Infinite Sea, picks up almost immediately after the end of the The 5th Wave. Cassie, mourning the loss of Evan Walker who has been missing since they blew up the alien base, is holed up in an abandoned motel with young refugees from the Others’ internment camp. Led by Zombie, the jock from Cassie’s high school, the small group of children and teens must make a decision: wait for Evan, as he promised Cassie he would always find her, or head south for the winter. Although Cassie has never trusted her, Ringer volunteers to recon the area before they make a final decision. Cassie even feels a bit of teenage envy toward the intelligent and highly competent soldier-girl. Silly, but very human.

Through flashbacks, the reader learns more about the silent Poundcake, Ringer’s father, and Evan Walker’s life before the invasion. We do find out what happened to Evan Walker after the explosion. And, the best part of all, Ringer becomes even more badass than the last book.
I went into THE INFINITE SEA wanting to know one thing: WHAT HAPPENED TO EVAN WALKER BECAUSE HOLY FREAKING ALIENS EVERYWHERE THE ENDING OF THE FIFTH WAVE WAS LIKE…WHAT EVEN?!

Actually, I had a few other unanswered questions too, but still. Evan. I needed to know what happened to him.

I expected THE INFINITE SEA to pick up where THE FIFTH WAVE left off, with Cassie anxious to find out what happened to Evan, and figuring out how to save humanity. So you can imagine my surprise when that didn’t happen. In fact, the story opens with Ringer, a character I barely remembered from book one and honestly, didn’t care all that much about. My bad. Because we end up spending 70% of the book with her.

Yes, we find out what happened to Evan.
Eventually.
And yes, we catch up with Cassie, Ben, Sam, Poundcake and Dumbo. But if you go into this expecting some kind of epic humalien reunion with lots of romance and lots of kissing, well—good luck with that.

As with THE FIFTH WAVE, there are multiple POVs that not only alternate between characters but switch tense too. (You risk getting lost if you aren’t paying attention.) The action is sporadic and the intensity doesn’t kick up until about the halfway mark. But even then it doesn’t last long. We do find out what’s really going on with Vosch and the Others, but only after wading through copious amounts of superfluous information and metaphors that employ the title of the book which was far more confusing than it was helpful.

And then there was the moment that won the award for Most Creative Escape Tactic Ever. And by creative, I mean, I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.
I struggled to decide between 3 and 4 stars. Wish they had the option of 3 1/2.

The "Infinite Sea" suffers under the curse of the sequel. The second in a series is always the weakest link.

This felt much more disappointing than usual because "The 5th Wave" was, without a doubt, one of the best sci-fi books I’ve read. You fell in the love with the characters, especially Cassie & Evan (and yes, they fell in love with each other). The book was never trite or tiresome or meandering. It was just a great read.

So how did this second in the series fail in comparison with the first?

First, there is not enough Cassie and Evan. They essentially become secondary characters in this book. We barely hear from them or about them. Instead, the focus shifts to other characters, especially Ringer.

The problem is our heart is with Cassie. I really wanted the story to stay with her (primarily). I have no problem with a fleshing out of secondary characters like Ringer, but I just don’t want to read a whole (or even half) book about her.

Second, this book became much too convoluted and confusing story-wise. Always the most successful stories are the simplest. The story of bad aliens come to earth to wipe out the humans by something akin to invasion of the body snatchers (the implants really being the first wave against the humans) was simple, but extremely engaging and well-written.

This second book was much too confusing, especially about the implants. Yes, I realize the point was to bring the reader to a place that the characters found themselves in – you can trust no one, because who is really the good guys and who the bad? You just don’t know.

I just felt like this was not done successfully.

Well I just have to say that this book blew all my expectations out the window. This is definitely the best book in the extinction cycle series and one of the best books I have read this year. It blew my mind. The twists and the revelations in this book just…just…. IT BLEW MY MIND! If you are after an addicting story full of action, suspense, intrigue and heart felt emotion then look no further! (That sounds like such a cheesy advertising line, but it is true!). This is the kind of book that kept me up late at night until early hours of the morning. I kept reading even when I knew I had to be up bright and early the next day. I most happily sacrificed sleep for this brilliant story. I felt glued to this book and only reluctantly put it down. I was all over the place with my emotions when reading this story. At some points I was sitting alone reading my book with what was probably a very stupid grin on my face, while at other points I probably looked even sillier with my jaw gaping to the floor. Needless to say this is a book pulls at my heart. I have become so attached to the characters but was happy to see some new additions to the Extinction Cycle world. Be prepared for intense feelings of “I NEED THE NEXT BOOK, NOW!!!!” because this is how I feel after finishing this story. I await, mostly patiently, for the next instalment.

Extinction Evolution is the fourth book in the Extinction Cycle series. Following on from book three, the world has been left in devastation with one of the few remaining strongholds located at Plum Island. Dr Lovato has created a new weapon designed to finally wipe out the variants, but will it work? Can they stay safe long enough for the weapon to work?

Nicholas Sansbury Smith has really outdone himself with this novel.
Extinction Evolution (The Extinction Cycle #4) by Nicholas Sansbury Smith is a non-stop roller coaster ride of tension, excitement, military action, political intrigue, and an existential crisis for humanity.

The cast of characters has expanded to include more scientists, Generals, fighting men, and politicians. There still is fall-out from the original secret biological mission to develop super soldiers. As new characters come on the scene, it is not always easy for Dr. Kate Lovato and Master Sergeant Reed Beckham to tell who can be trusted, and who has a different agenda than our band of survivors.

After many setbacks the entire government and the military command center retreats to an aircraft carrier battle group. This becomes the base of combat missions for our team.

Every time the military attempts to engage the Variants, there is a new development in these monsters. The military is fighting an ever moving target, one that is increIDg its capabilities at an astounding rate. Everything depends on Kate’s knowledge and skill in the lab to develop an effective weapon against the Variants. The Variants are not easy to kill, and every mission to take back a site, or rescue a trapped soldier, or capture a specimen for testing is another suicide mission for Team Ghost. And you never know who is not going to return from the mission.

There is a new team of experienced combat soldiers, who call themselves the Variant Hunters, lead by Staff Sergeant Jose Garcia. They will be put in harm’s way to take on missions that Team Ghost is too injured, or stretched too thin, to attempt. After promising Kate to keep her safe on Plum Island, Reed is constantly assigned new missions that takes him away.

If you hate reading 5-10 pages of a case brief in order to get one rule of law, this book is for you! I’m the type of person who just needs the facts, so when I’m reading a case brief all I’m thinking is, "get to the point!" or "how many words are you going to use in order to tell me that it had to be a material breach?" If that is you, or if you are having problems understanding the point of the case brief and how it fits into the big picture, trust me this book is for you. I’ve tried several others and they don’t compare. BTW these books are set up to mirror (keyed) your case books so make sure you get the right one.

I have found throughout my first year of Law School that the Emanuel Law Outlines are probably the more complete texts of the subject, Contracts. There are questions, answers and explanations of the answers. An answer doesn’t help me unless I know why and this book covers the information thoroughly.

This provides great supplementation along with using your casebook. I have used it when my hornbook or casebook leave me clueless still on certain concepts, etc. It also it extremely useful for not forgetting important information for my outline. If "K" is a confusing concept for you, then this is a "must have" for you.

Dark Places (Movie Tie-In Edition): A Novel Audio CD – Audiobook, Unabridged
Author: Visit ‘s Gillian Flynn Page ID: 0553399322

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Edgar-finalist Flynn’s second crime thriller tops her impressive debut, Sharp Objects. When Libby Day’s mother and two older sisters were slaughtered in the family’s Kansas farmhouse, it was seven-year-old Libby’s testimony that sent her 15-year-old brother, Ben, to prison for life. Desperate for cash 24 years later, Libby reluctantly agrees to meet members of the Kill Club, true crime enthusiasts who bicker over famous cases. She’s shocked to learn most of them believe Ben is innocent and the real killer is still on the loose. Though initially interested only in making a quick buck hocking family memorabilia, Libby is soon drawn into the club’s pseudo-investigation, and begins to question what exactly she saw—or didn’t see—the night of the tragedy. Flynn fluidly moves between cynical present-day Libby and the hours leading up to the murders through the eyes of her family members. When the truth emerges, it’s so twisted that even the most astute readers won’t have predicted it. (May)

From The New Yorker

Libby Day, the protagonist of Flynn’s disturbing second novel, was, as a seven-year-old, the only survivor of her family’s brutal murder by her older brother, an event dubbed by the media the “Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas.” Twenty-five years later, she has become a hardened, selfish young woman with no friends or family. Since the tragedy, her life has been paid for by donations of well-wishers, but, with that fund now empty, Libby must find a way to make money. Her search leads her to The Kill Club, a secret society of people obsessed with the details of notorious murders. As Libby tries to gather artifacts to sell to The Kill Club (whose members, it turns out, doubt the guilt of her brother), she is forced to reëxamine the events of the night of the murder. Flynn’s well-paced story deftly shows the fallibility of memory and the lies a child tells herself to get through a trauma.

Libby Day was seven years old when her mother and two sisters were massacred in a blood-soaked home invasion dubbed by the press as "The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas." It was Libby’s testimony which put her then-fifteen-year old brother, Ben, into prison for the rest of his life for the heinous murders.

Now, it is almost twenty-five years later, and Libby, depressed, angry and broke has agreed to attend a meeting of the Kill Club, a strange conglomerate of people obsessed with famous murders. Some of the Kill Club members have become interested in the murders of Libby’s family because they are convinced that Ben has been wrongly convicted. After meeting with the Kill Club, Libby, although still sure that Ben is the murderer, decides to try to make some cash from her family’s grisly history by charging the Kill Club members to interview people who might have further information about the murders.

In hauntingly compelling prose, this wonderfully talented author deftly unfolds the story of what really happened during the early morning hours of January 3, 1985, and how searching for, and uncovering, that truth will change the lives of Libby and Ben.

The book is told in an interesting intermittent flashback format, with Libby, tough and damaged from her horrific childhood, narrating the present-day chapters in first-person, while the flashback chapters, told in third-person, describe the actions of several key characters on one winter’s day in 1985.

Besides Libby, the most fascinating character in the book is that of Ben, the awkward, aimless, angry boy, tottering on the brink of manhood.
Who killed Libby Day’s family? This is the mystery that is presented on the first page and the subsequent chapters detail Libby’s attempt – half-hearted at first, to get the answers she so desperately needs in order for her to get on track in life. The book alternates points of view from Libby in present day to various characters from the past – describing the events that led up to, and include the infamous day of the murders twenty-five years previous – January 2, 1985.

The book is paced and the author writes excellent and well developed descriptions of the characters – Libby’s mother, aunt Diane, sisters and brother – as well as of the setting of the Kinnakee, Kansas farm and Libby’s house on the bluff in Kansas City, Missouri. (As a KCMO native, I was surprised to find a book set in this Midwest city because it is so rare and I really enjoyed that fact about the book.)

Because of the way the novel is written, the various points of view in each chapter are used to advance Libby’s determination and investigation into actually and finally finding out who killed her family and why. The plot is revealed in layers and the reader isn’t quite sure how all of this is going to come together – but it does. This is not a heart pounding thriller, but a more dark and plodding one – you know that denouement is just around the corner – you’re hoping that Libby is going to get the information she wants as she confronts first one and then another of the surviving family and others involved with the search for the killer(s) of her family. Indeed, the hangers on – the Kill Club members – and her father, the loser Runner, only add to her consternation as she seems thwarted at every turn.
The basic plotline of this story was excellent. Youngest daughter in a single-mother family of four survives the slaughter of said family and then testifies that her brother was the killer. Nearly twenty-five years later circumstances arise that make her question everything she’s ever known and the ensuing story about finding answers leads us to a resolution. I thought this premise sounded very interesting and that the novel would provide me with a little bit of thought-provocation and a lot of suspense.

Unfortunately, the way each of these characters were written made them very unsympathetic to me as a reader. Many may disagree with me, by saying that anyone who experiences the brutal death of a family member has the right to be selfish throughout the rest of his or her life. But, I disagree with that theory and the actions of Libby Day, her tone in telling the story and her mood towards those around her who only wanted to help did not endear her to me at all.

What redeemed this novel for me were the flashback chapters told from the perspectives of Ben and Patty Day, accused brother and murdered mother respectively. Hearing the story told, in the day leading up to the murders, from their points of view were the pieces of this book that made me keep reading instead of tossing the book aside for something better. In these chapters, the author did a remarkable job of laying out the puzzles pieces that no one had been able to put together up to that point.

This story has many layers and I’m sure that different readers will get many different messages from it. I was disappointed that I didn’t like the main character more, but that didn’t stop me from wanting to get answers about what really happened "that night" just like she did.
